Amazon.com developed a software and hardware platform for editing and displaying e-books and all other digital media. The 1st of its generation was launched in November, 2007 only in United States. But now the latest hardware device 3rd generation kindle with 3G support for use in almost 100 countries and territories was announced on 28 July , 2010.
Consumer Electronic prices tend to fluctuate wildly. Just three years ago, a e-book reader would cost you around $399. Last year , for only $299 you could have bought Kindle generation 2. And this summer the latest and highly equipped Kindle 3 with Wifi only configuration would damage you $139 USD. And Kindle 3 with Wifi + 3G configuration would cost you $189.
Now, this seems extremely affordable in comparison with the earlier versions. But if we think the other way around , are we fooling ourselves thinking that $139 is cheap ?? May be not. It’s a believed fact that consumer electronics around $100 are the holy things waiting for someone to quickly grab them. Often people start to make their purchases and decisions out of just a simple impulse rather than a careful calculation.
E-readers are moving towards this point . I even read in some blogs while browsing over the internet that some e-readers may even be available at $99 by the holiday season this year. In five years , I can guarantee you that only the High variant models will cost you this much and the lower variants could be easily landed for $49. Just as a comparison , some people even you Apple’s iPad as a e-book reader which currently starts at $499.
It’s some what a proven fact that many more people would buy e-readers if they cost less than $100. To achieve this , the prices have to come way down. Once they hit less than $100 price tag , sales will go up-to 10 times.
A debatable thing : At $139, would you say the new Kindle is cheap? Is it affordable? Is it an impulse buy?
