Spammers now create their own URL shortening

Spammers are no longer limited to use anonymous shortened URLs contributors on any of the many existing services, but have begun to combine this technique to take the user to malware sites by creating their own shortening services URL.

Symantec has found this new pattern, which security experts warned that these new techniques led to an increase of 2.9% of spam for the month of May.

The method used by spammers is more complex than one might think at first: Instead of including links to their bogus shortened URLs sites, what they do is create the links on legitimate sites like bitly. Is by clicking when the user is directed to the shortening false URLs, hence the spam site redirects users where they want to take them.

Since Symantec has also reassured some users, ensuring that "most of the abuse of spam URLs from shortened sites are normal" but also warned that there have been "some limited use of shortened URLs pointing to malware, and some even to "phishing sites, "according to V3.co.uk.
