ST-Ericsson will provide the chips to Nokia handsets
So far the Windows-based Phone 7 devices have been used Qualcomm Snapdragon processor as a result of the strict uniform standards by Microsoft. But it seems that at least one chip maker will enter that ecosystem when Nokia starts to work on their Windows-based Phone as part of its strategic alliance with Microsoft.
ST-Ericsson, a joint venture between STMicroelectronics and Ericsson, will become one of the two suppliers of chips for Windows terminals, Nokia Phones, starting with WP8, so Forbes says in its blog.
ST-Ericsson initially uses a chipset with U8500, a dual-core processor that can now be found in Sidekick Infuse Samsung 4G or 4G. Future devices that Nokia plans to launch in 2012, will work with future versions of the U8500.
The news could not be better for ST-Ericsson, their stocks have fallen by 33% in first quarter revenue, with losses of $179 million. Now the company expects to achieve 'break even' performance in the second quarter of 2012 through collaboration with seven of the nine major manufacturers of mobile handsets.
